Positive: Speedo is quite a good cook and made us a couple different breakfasts, as well as a great dinner (accommodating our dietary preferences with ease!). The property, although it was listed as being on the mainland, is actually located on a particularly gorgeous and idyllic island on the lake itself. When Speedo communicated that we would need a boat to get there, I immediately grew a bit concerned about being stuck out there with only the hotel restaurant and amenities available (at inflated prices, which I'd experienced before in East Africa). I asked Speedo for a look at the food menu and asked about canoe rental and he provided me good prices for both, which worked out well. Finally, our host offered us a brief walking tour of the island, which was a highly appreciated gesture on our first evening there. The bed was comfortable (though the mosquito net was too small and didn't actually seal the sleeping area) and the room was clean. The view from the balcony was amazing!
Negative: There was only really one significant issue with the extremely rustic room. The attached, ensuite toilets were squatty (hole in the ground), long-drop style toilets, which wouldn't have bothered us that much if it weren't for the strong smell wafting through the room that actually made it hard to sleep at times. In this case, it might have been better to actually get a room without an attached bathroom, although I'm sure the facilities would have been quite rustic in any case. Another thing to note, there wasn't really any drinking water available. Fortunately, we carry some pretty heavy-duty filters, but when we tried to filter the water from the hand-washing jug (the only water we could really find on the property besides our drip shower nozzle) it retained a very strong, acrid taste. I'd suggest bringing a good supply of drinking water! Finally, as I mentioned before, I had very specifically asked about the extra charges to get to the property (once I found out it was on an island) and was informed that the boda drivers would charge 12k each, one way, (it seemed a bit expensive for a boda, but was also a long, very uncomfortable and bumpy road. Maybe try to find a taxi that will take you?) and that the boat ride from the jetty to the island would be free. I was surprised to find out on our return that the boat ride OUT was free, but the return (even though Speedo was heading into town anyway) cost an additional 20k. In general, I think it's a much better practice to be upfront about any extra charges beyond the room price, even if they aren't necessarily all that expensive. The trip was overall worth it and I would probably do it again to get to experience beautiful Lake Bunyoni, but hopefully future guests will be better prepared with all the facility and cost details.
