Rustic Stable Barn Riverside Retreat | House in Athy
1 Bedroom House in Kilkea, Athy
Our newly renovated Stable Guest accommodation is a special place to stay. The entire property, which consists of a Georgian House, seven storey stone mill and converted stableyard (in which the The Stable is located), are all nestled between the River Barrow and the Grand Canal and in a special area of conservation (SAC). The canal and river meet at the southern tip of our property which has essentially formed an island, the only access being over a 200 year old metal drawbridge.
The Stable guest accommodation has been renovated in a sustainable and creative manner. Most of the installations are on site salvage from the mill or outbuildings, years of selective hoarding and upcycling. There is a welcoming original Victorian fireplace with a woodburning stove, exposed beams, traditional farmhouse style kitchenette, open staircase and a shower room with pressurised hot water. When our 30KW HydroTurbine is running, the entire property benefits from its renewable energy source. While we do have broadband on site it is not yet connected to the Stable, it is scheduled to be done in early January 2020 - our listing will be updated when it is completed.
Direct access to The River Barrow, Grand Canal, Barrow way walking trail. There is a private tennis court on site that can be accessed with prior arrangement. Fishing rights on site to both watercourses.
Myself and Sinead are mostly on site with our family. One of us will be available to help with any queries you may have. We hope to set you up well for your stay in advance of or at check-in.
As a special area of conservation (SAC) we benefit from magnificant watercourses and the wildlife they attract. There are a family of otters living beneath the mill that are a rare treat to see. Other fauna noted recently have been a white barn owl hunting in the mill, herons catching crayfish in the mill race, red squirrels gathering up hazelnuts in the garden, swans and waterfowl nesting along the river bank and all types of birds attracted to our summer fruit garden - but they have to be wary of the peregrine falcon on the prowl! Local musts to do are a trip to O' Briens traditional bar and grocers in Emily Square Athy, a stroll in Mullaghreelan Wood close to Kilkea Castle, a vist to The Old Yard (vintage cafe and shop) & traditional music in Clancy's bar Athy. There are plenty of local attractions, bars, nightlife, restaurants and take outs within a short distance. But when you get here you may just want to put your feet up in front of the stove, with a cup in your hand and enjoy the record player or read a book - bliss.
There are local tourist offices in Emily Square, Athy and in Carlow beside the Cathedral. There are plenty of fantastic local events and we will do our best to let you know whats going on locally during your stay.
We are a few kilometers out of town - but easily accessible. There is no regular public transport to our doorstep, but nearby towns - Athy, Carlow and Castledermot have. A local taxi service is available and there is a walking riverside trail to both Athy and Carlow. We do have boat moorings if thats how you decide to arrive! You are welcome to use our Canadian Canoe, with a simple request. Lifejackets will be provided.
